The Marchioness of Dufferin and Ava (1941–2020) was a painter, yoghurt- maker and the entrepreneurial chatelaine of Clandeboye. During her time there, everyone from Van Morrison to David Hockney visited the estate.
Born a Guinness, Lindy Dufferin had a gilded childhood. Ben Hogan taught her golf, Jacques Cousteau taught her to scuba-dive and Truman Capote befriended her as a little girl. But it was a fractured youth – salvaged by Bloomsbury artist Duncan Grant, who showed Lindy how painting could be a way of life. For the next sixty years, she exhibited across the world – in realist, Cubist and abstract styles, drawing from the English and Irish Romantic traditions of landscape painting. And, with the tragic, premature death of her husband, Lindy set about reinvigorating Clandeboye with visionary zeal.
This moving book – edited by Harry Mount, Lindy’s godson – includes tributes from friends and her Clandeboye family.
