Home Birds: Days Out Getting to Know the Birds of Northern Ireland (September 2022) by Dot Blakely and Anne Marie McAleese is a combination of memoir and nature writing that covers the whole of Ulster. It is illustrated with more than 100 stunning photographs and is an uplifting celebration of our landscape and natural world.

Join Dot and Anne Marie at Clandeboye for a walk to spot some of the birds highlighted in their new book.

Listeners to the BBC Radio Ulster’s Your Place and Mine will be familiar with birdwatching expert Dot Blakely from her regular appearance with host Anne Marie McAleese. Together they have visited hundreds of locations to see oystercatchers, fulmars, pied wagtails, buzzards, kestrels, whooper swans and many more.

Bangor local, Dot has been fascinated and in awe of birds since she was young. As a child, she remembers her dad taking her round the castle grounds, pointing out a robin's nest in a tree trunk and telling her never to look in or disturb a nesting bird. That was the start!

Anne Marie McAleese has presented the award-winning Your Place and Mine on BBC Radio Ulster since 1991. Before meeting Dot Blakely she knew that birds flew and that there were a lot of them. More than two decades later, Anne Marie and Dot's regular chat on the show is as popular as ever with listeners, and Anne Marie continues to be an enthusiastic birding student while peppering their unique conversations with weird and wonderful facts about the places they visit.

As this is an outdoor event, please dress appropriately for Northern Ireland weather!
