At the end of 2021, five writers were invited to write and record an essay – to uncover the untold stories and idiosyncrasies of the everyday and hidden histories of Northern Ireland in its centenary year. Three of these writers will read their essays live as we discuss Another Northern Ireland.
Claire Mitchell – Chalk on the Wall
After discovering a message chalked on a wall, writer Claire Mitchell peels back the layers of her Newtownards hometown in a radical history.
Glenn Patterson – Euphoria
Novelist Glenn Patterson on Belfast’s hairdressers and clothes shops during the Troubles.
Mícheál McCann – The Art of Staying
Poet Mícheál McCann navigated the careful etiquette of a rural Northern Ireland wake.
These essays were part of a short series, Another Northern Ireland, commissioned for BBC Radio 3’s The Essay, and also featured on BBC Radio Ulster’s Storytellers. They were co-produced by Conor Garrett and Ophelia Byrne.
